Highlight
Madrid, May 22, 2024 – The Spanish company SAPA is participating in the winning consortium of the European Defense Fund (EDF) 2023 call for proposals in the Main Battle Tank (MBT) category. This participation not only reflects SAPA’s commitment and innovative capacity, but also highlights its key role in propelling the future European MBT mobility system.

The project, known as MARTE (Main Armoured Tank of Europe), aims to develop a new Main Battle Tank (MBT) platform that integrates innovative and disruptive technologies to address current and future threats. The MARTE project, involving 11 European Union (EU) Member States and Norway, represents an unprecedented collaborative effort to design a European MBT that meets the strategic and operational needs of the region’s defense. With a total investment of €20.22 million and a duration of 24 months, the MARTE consortium aims to provide advanced solutions in terms of protection, detection, and firepower, while improving the cost efficiency and service life of the MBT compared to existing solutions.

SAPA, with its advanced technology in combat transmissions and propulsion systems, is leading the «Mobility and Power» task, crucial to improving the vehicle’s efficiency, performance, and maneuverability in diverse terrain and operational conditions. The Spanish company will be responsible for developing highly efficient powertrain and transmission system concepts, aimed at increasing the efficiency and maneuverability, reducing fuel consumption, and improving the range of the future MBT.

The European Defense Fund (EDF) 2024 call for proposals will soon be launched, where the land-based competition will determine which consortium will be the winner to develop the future infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

SAPA hopes to participate in this new call for proposals and, given its position in mobility programs in Spain and the United States for heavy vehicles, has a strong chance of ensuring that the mobility of the future infantry fighting vehicle (of the PIZARRO-VAC range) will also be «Made in Spain.»
